In a country where obesity, diabetes & heart disease are at epidemic proportions, why do we still listen to the government, food corporations, and the mainstream medical establishment about what we should eat when none of these entities appear to be qualified to tell us anything about nutrition?
The government pushes sales of wheat, corn and soy for lobbyists and allows “food” corporations, like Monsanto, to introduce GMO crops loaded with pesticides solely for profit into our food supply. Other food corporations churn out processed food products loaded with sugar and chemical additives and label them “natural.” Many doctors, who only get a week or so of nutrition training at med school, push pharmaceuticals to treat symptoms, not cure the actual diet-related diseases. Put simply, our government, food corporations, and medical establishment are failing at keeping our population healthy. The American food system and nutrition guidelines programs are broken and do not cater to human health. In fact, if you really take a look at the prescribed Standard American Diet (SAD) it is a diet that is almost the opposite of a healthy, evolutionary diet humans were meant to eat.
In fact, everything around you is the opposite of the way it should be:
- In America, most people go to work for 8-12 hours per day and spend that time sitting. They drive home sitting. They get home, sit to eat and then sit again for another 3-4 hours watching TV, playing video games, or going online. Sitting is extremely unhealthy.
- In America, many people do not exercise at all. They do not even go outside to take a short walk. Same with their children.
- In America, people seem stressed out all the time, moody, short-tempered or depressed. Financial problems, troubled relationships, health issues and work issues snowball and since we do not make time to slow-down, relax, make difficult choices, and perform self-care, these troubles expand into our view of the world and into our guts. Stress wreaks havoc on our bodies and minds.
- In America, most people do not get more than 6 hours sleep per night. Because of stress, lack of exercise, poor diet, and long work days, there is a huge section of people that suffer from sleep disorders. How do we heal if we do not sleep?
- In America, most people eat out of boxes filled with processed grains, sugars and chemicals and call it food. All the interior aisles of supermarkets – the bulk of it – are filled with this processed food in pretty and fun packages with colorful labels and false health claims like “all natural” “low fat” “contains whole grains”. Because we are uninformed, most people fall for it. “Shop the perimeter of the grocery stores for real food,” our health advocates and gurus tell us – and they are right. But even most of the meat, vegetables, fruit and dairy products being offered at the average market are factory-farmed, GMO, pesticide-laden, pasteurized & homogenized crap. Yes, in a standard American grocery store, those are our “healthiest” options.
This is NOT how humans were meant to live.
So why do we continue to listen to an establishment that does not have our best interests in mind when it comes to our health?
We listen because we have been misled.
In America, there is a pervasive idea that if we work hard and struggle we will eventually get what we want. Unfortunately, this is not true for most of us. Working hard for little money causes stress and anxiety, little time for sleep, and less time with the family – the family you are working so hard to take care of in the first place. Stress leads to health problems, fatigue, irritability, and depression. Your SAD (Standard American Diet) feeds this cycle because of high sugar content – causing blood sugar highs and lows all day – and empty calories are causing you to feel hungry all the time. Feeling hungry all the time makes you eat more food. And so the cycle goes. On top of that, you think you are eating healthy because you eat what is says to on My Plate. But many people are overweight, constipated and have high blood pressure. Diabetes is rampant. Many Americans are taking 3 different kinds of medications, like one for high blood pressure, one for high cholesterol, and a sleeping pill since they can’t sleep at night due to stress. They are told to eat more fiber, so they eat a lot of cereals and other grains. They haven’t exercised in years because they have no energy. They go to the drive-thru because it is 8:00pm and they haven’t seen their kids since 6:00am and they know they need to feed them something and have no energy to cook. Plus it’s cheap. They figure that once in awhile it is OK to eat fast food, but are ashamed to admit that once in awhile has become 3-4 days a week.
Does this sound familiar?
Americans have been beaten down by a thankless system and yet still go through this cycle every day to take care of their families. That shows how strong we really are. How about we take some of that strength and use it to our advantage? There is always a better solution then surrendering to the ugly cycle of birth, school, work, death. We have to remember that life is meant to be enjoyed and lived fully, it’s not just a means to an end. Even if the systems in place do not work to our advantage, we can still control how we decide to live our lives on a daily basis.
We listen because we are confused.
We are bombarded with so much conflicting information that we are no longer sure what foods are healthy. For example, we have been told as long as I can remember that fat and cholesterol are bad. That was a fallacy based on biased studies and bad science. You need fat to be healthy. No one in the government or mainstream medical establishment has come clean on this errant finding and many people have died because of it. It is shameful that such nonsense is still being promoted today since we now know better. Unfortunately, people are still being told to eat SAD by all these guilty parties, and are getting fatter and sicker. We are told that consuming sugar in moderation is OK, when sugar has been proven to promote cancer cell growth, diabetes, & tooth decay! (WHY IS THAT OK IN MODERATION???) We are being told that eating whole grains are healthy, but due to the large quantity we consume from processed sources, we are eating empty calories and being stuffed with omega-6 fatty acids at toxic levels. Eating this way also promotes consuming exceedingly high processed carbohydrate levels (which break down into sugar) which we could never burn off by exercising on a daily basis. All of this contributes to weight gain, inflammation and diabetes. Plus “whole grains” contain phytates , lectins and many contain wheat gluten. These are actually anti-nutrients bind to other essential nutrients and prevent our bodies from absorbing them, and cause problems to the lining of the digestive tract. More and more people are being diagnosed with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. Even if you are not one of those people, digestive problems have run so amok in this country that people actually think it is normal to have heartburn after a meal – and gas, bloating, constipation or diarrhea on a regular basis. What does your doctor prescribe? Antacids. Yes, more pills that mask symptoms, not solve the problem! All of this “guidance” from our authorities is a recipe for inflammation and illness. On top of that, we get a lifetime drug prescription that has more side-effects that can kill us than the disease we have! And even after taking the pills, we are still fat, sick stressed and exhausted. We are so confused about what to eat, we have forgotten to listen to our own bodies! By no means am I telling you to ignore your doctor’s advice. I am just reminding you that most doctors are not nutrition experts and should not be regarded as such. Always question them if you are getting prescribed a pill instead of a dietary or lifestyle solution to stress, sleep disorders, and minor digestive issues.
We need to stop listening and start thinking.
I could sit here and continue to blame the government, corporations and doctors for this sad state of affairs, but what about us? Are we not to blame for sitting around (literally) doing nothing about our poor health? There comes a time when we must be accountable for ourselves and our lifestyles. Just like no one is going to do your job for you at work, or pay your mortgage, or take out the trash, there is no one that is going to improve your own health but YOU. If you care more about purchasing the newest, cutting edge technological gadget, but then say you “can’t afford” to shop at health food stores or farmer’s markets, or Whole Foods or even Trader Joe’s, then you are to blame for your ill health. What do having these things matter if you are dead? You have been lulled to sleep by advertising and the lie that materialism is crucial to living the best life you can. But the truth is that your HEALTH allows you to live the best life you can. Period. Even if you don’t buy into materialism but you still say you cannot afford to shop at healthier venues, add up the money you spend on groceries. Then add how much you spend on fast food, vending machines, designer coffees, sodas, alcohol and energy drinks. Then add up how much your drug prescriptions, doctor visits and follow up visits cost. Chances are, you can afford to shop for real food. Did you know that Americans spend the most money on healthcare and the least money on food of every industrialized nation? Does that seem like a coincidence?
Yes, we all die. Sure, we live longer than ever because the medical establishment is fantastic at extending lifespan with pills & surgery. But I am talking about prolonging the quality of our lives while we are alive. Most old people are on medications, in wheelchairs, bedridden, or have some form of dementia. In most cases, if we just took the time to treat our insides as good as our outsides by making informed food choices and moving around more, we may be able to avoid all that . If you have children, don’t you want more than to just see them grow up and have their own kids? Don’t you want to be able to play with them while you can – and then play with their kids too? Do you want to be that scary, sick, batty old grandparent that kids cry when they see because of all the tubes coming out of their face? Wouldn’t you rather find out how much longer life can be enjoyed not just how long you can be kept alive?
If you are eating (& feeding your children) cereals (even “whole grain,”) pancakes, waffles, bagels, donuts or any processed grain-based sweetened treats for breakfast, fast food for lunch, processed & pre-packaged junk for dinner, and cake, cookies or ice cream for dessert, do you not realize that your diet may be killing you & your family? Furthermore, did you know that if you are already overweight, obese, diabetic, or have various digestion troubles, that you already have symptoms that it is? So why are you still doing it? You knowingly wouldn’t give your child cocaine, would you? But there is research that shows that sugar is as toxic and addictive as cocaine. I’d hate to think we don’t know by now that sugar and junk food is bad for us, but if we do know isn’t that even worse? If we know this, why have we resigned ourselves to harming ourselves? Why do people continue to live this way, becoming ill from mostly diet-related diseases like Acid-Reflux, GERD, IBS, Crohn’s, Ulcerative Colitis, diabetes, heart disease, gall bladder disease, food allergies, leaky gut, eczema, acne, tooth decay, and even cancer, and then go to the doctor to get pills, shots, or surgery to mitigate against symptoms but never solve the actual problem? Why do people do this when they can heal most of these issues by performing basic human maintenance on themselves by just eating real food and moving around more? Is it because pills & surgery have become just another branch of our culture’s preference for a quick-fix, instant gratification type of solution? Are Americans so sick from our poor diets & lifestyles that we have actually lost the ability to be objective?
WE NEED TO EMPOWER OURSELVES.
Then start doing.
Did you know that most people are addicted to certain foods and do not know it? Do you know that food cravings cannot be controlled by eating the standard American diet because it is loaded with those same foods you are addicted to? I will repeat that in other words: the diet you have been prescribed has made you addicted to it. Are you outraged? You should be! This is not your fault. Your food cravings are far more powerful than good intentions. Most people are always hungry no matter how much they eat. This is a helpless feeling, and one I remember all too well. Here is some truth: You are always hungry because you are eating nutritionally unfit food. The nutrient density in our food is what triggers the brain that we are full. Anything that comes in a box is not food, has little to no nutrients in it, and will never fill you up for long. Those products are loaded with chemicals, processed grains and sugar. You are also always hungry because most likely you are addicted to sugar. This causes cravings for sweets. Sugar wreaks havoc on your blood sugar levels and moods, and Americans are oscillating between wired and tired all day, and eating more & more sugar to feel better when their energy wanes. But like any addictive substance, the sugar “high” only lasts a short time and you are back on the roller-coaster again. This is the ride to obesity and diabetes. You need to get off that ride!
So I propose something simple: Since we can acknowledge that the whole system in place is not here to help us, how about we take control of our own health instead? As long as the establishment is churning out half-truths and obfuscation, I believe that we need to look at ourselves honestly and acknowledge that the way we eat and live is making us sick and fat, and in the end we should hold ourselves accountable. Question your doctors, start caring more about where your food comes from, and get outside in the sun and play. Get more sleep and make time for relaxation. Be aware that you can choose to take control of your own health. You can find a way to do it! Realize that obesity and Type-2 diabetes are just SYMPTOMS, not life sentences, and it is never too late to try to heal yourself. You have the power to change your own life.
