There are many great mysteries in life; why are you here? What does the future hold? What is your cat thinking? We may ponder these questions and over time we may give different answers because ultimately the truth is unknown and we only have our perspective to guide us. Perspective ultimately drives everything in life. But it is tricky! As you well know, your perspective is often changeable based on your individual circumstances. The key is finding consistency. If you can maintain a positive perspective when things in life get tough, then you have found a major key to success in any endeavor. If you are in control of how you want your life to be, then even the most difficult trials you face will not derail the positive view you have for life.
Having a positive view of yourself is key to your success in anything.
Especially when you are overweight or obese.
Losing weight is sometimes considered a holy grail for some people. You want to lose 20 pounds. It is the only thing you can think about because losing 20 pounds will make you happy and you will do it at all costs. You eat a low-fat diet and join a gym. You eventually reach your goal and BAM! You are excited! Good for you! But some time passes and you are still somehow unhappy even though you look cute in those little dresses. Why? Because losing weight doesn’t solve everything. If you are unhappy as an overweight person, you will be unhappy as a thinner person. Remember, PERSPECTIVE ULTIMATELY DRIVES EVERYTHING IN LIFE. Eventually, you will not be able to sustain the horrible low-fat diet (because diets don’t work and your body needs fat) and you will stop running in place on the treadmill everyday (because running on a treadmill without doing other varieties of exercises is boring as f&*k) and so you stop doing it as much. Shame, fear and pain start bubbling up inside you. The weight starts to come back on and you are absolutely destroyed. So you give up and exist in a stew of your own self-judgment. You blame yourself instead of truly understanding why this happened.
Why would you ever be this mean to yourself?
If you are looking at a number on a scale and thinking that if that number was smaller you would be happier, you need to change your perspective. And quick. Because the first key to weight loss that lasts is believing in yourself. The second key is understanding that most common ideas about losing weight do not work. And the final, most important key is that losing “weight” is not the goal. Finding freedom from ALL that weighs you down is!
So how do you change your perspective and find this freedom?
1) Be as patient & kind to yourself as you would be to someone you love.
2) Understand that losing weight is about healing, not a number on a scale.
3) Do things you have always wanted to do by letting go of fear and shame
4) Love yourself as you are right now
